Illustrated Talk Tuesday Sept. 11th 2012 @ 20.00hrs

Following a wonderful opening talk last week by Glen Wightman, MulkearLIFE’s series of Four Free Illustrated Talks will continue tomorrow evening Tuesday 11th September. "The Future for Ireland’s Freshwater Fish on the Red Data List" is the title of talk with Dr. James King as guest speaker. Dr. King is a Fisheries Biologist with Inland Fisheries Ireland and is based in Swords, Co. Dublin.

In a scientific report published in 2011, six of Ireland’s native fish species were classified as "threatened". The Red Data list of Irish Amphibians, Reptiles and Freshwater Fish found the European eel to be critically endangered, while pollan, Arctic char, twaite shad, Killarney shad and Atlantic salmon were all deemed to be "vulnerable".

The report provides a ‘health-check’ on the status of Ireland’s fresh water fish species. It catalogues the distribution and conservation status of the listed species. Most importantly the report clearly outlines the threats facing various fish species. These include water pollution, the spread of invasive species, over exploitation of the fishing resource, poor river and catchment management and climate change.

Barriers to upstream migration, such as weirs, were highlighted as being of particular importance to the lampreys. MulkearLIFE is an example of catchment management project whish is working to address many of the measures outlined.

Dr. King’s talk should be of interest to local anglers, biologists and anyone with an interest in conservation. The venue is the Inland Fisheries Ireland Office, Dock Road, Limerick, which is a 2-minute drive from Limerick City Centre, with ample free parking in front of the building. All talks in the September series of Illustrated Talks start at 8.00pm and there is free admission to all talks.
