One of the main project actions for the Mulkear LIFE project was the enhancement of drained and impacted sections of the Mulkear River catchment to enhance the habitat and improve the conservation value for salmonids, lamprey and European otter. In addition the actions will also support other instream and riparian biodiversity which are essential components in the habitat.
The rehabilitation works adopted were those developed by O’Grady1 and are internationally recognised methods for habitat restoration following anthropogenic impacts. The structures constructed as part of the project served to enhance macro-invertebrate and fish populations, with obvious positive benefits for European otters and riparian bird species.
